A Great start to the League for Hillfoots 1sts!
Saturday 27 August saw the official start to Hillfoots’ League Campaign for the 2016 / 2017 season. Kinross RFC welcomed both a full Hillfoots 1st XV squad and the late summer sunshine to Muir Grove. As expected the opening salvos were fired in uncompromising fashion and after sustained pressure in the Kinross 2 area “Foots” were first to trouble the scorers with an unconverted 5 pointer. With scrum and territorial advantage in hand Hillfoots came close to a second score minutes later but a defensive lapse saw the hosts return a 50m effort to lead 7-5 20mins into the clash. The all important battle of the gain line once again proved vital and another period of sustained pressure saw “Foots” dominate that area of the game and capitalise on some disorganised Kinross defence to score twice in succession to turn 19-7 to the good at the break.
After the break a series of probing attacking movements nearly saw Hillfoots extend their lead but they were denied by some very good Kinross defence and in the end it was the hosts who scored first to narrow the deficit to 19-12. That however, would be the final time Kinross put points on the board. After a regroup “Foots” upped the ante and scored another 3 tries, 1 converted to end the match as 36-12 victors, bagging 5 log points in the process.
Many thanks to the referee on the day, Steve Mellon, without which the encounter would not have been possible and to the Management and Staff at Kinross RFC for their fantastic hospitality and wonderful facilities.

Hillfoots Rams 29-37 Grangemouth Rugby Club 2nd XV
The Rams welcomed Grangemouth RFC to Tillicoultry on Saturday for their first game of the Season. The home side enjoyed some good early possession and territory, but could not breach an organised Stags defence until Lewis Coutts sold an outrageous dummy and outpaced the covering defence after 30 mins. Kenny Paterson added the extra two points. Grangemouth responded with two unconverted tries of their own to go into the break 7-10 up.
Grangemouth started the second half the way they finished the first, scoring an early try. The rest of the match was end to end with each team scoring a further four tries and a conversion each. Try scorers for The Rams were Nik Binning, Callum Murray, Kenny Paterson and Euan Jamieson, with Kenny Paterson landing one more conversion.
On balance, Grangemouth deserved their win and although disappointed to lose, The Rams players can take many positives from this game when they travel to Glenrothes Rugby Club next Saturday.
