TRY ‘FEST’ AT TILLICOULTRY.
HILLFOOTS 76 – FIFE SOUTHERN 12
‘Foots played Fife Southern at Tilly on Saturday and put on an entertaining show of pacey running to overcome a big, stuffy Fife side.
Playing downhill it didn’t take long for Foots to get on the scoresheet when Iain Kellie and the Foots pack took a scrum against the head and Calum McGee broke the opposition line to put Eric Hewitt over wide out. Calum then went over for a try after a good bit of interplay with Ian Nicholson, converted by Gregor Manson.
Fife began to get into the game with a series of ‘charges’ by their big forwards but were well contained by the Foots defence. Gavin Paterson then stepped round a couple of Fife players to crash over for a try , again converted by Gregor Manson. Fife then using their bulk aided by a series of penalties camped on the Foots line until they were eventually awarded a penalty try. Ian Nicholson went over for a try just on half time after another ball against the head by Foots., was carried on by Mark Johnston before Ian was able to stretch over.

Kenneth McVey showed good pace when he ran in the first of the second half tries, converted by Gregor Manson. The Foots superior fitness began to take effect and the forwards began exerting more pressure on Fife and first David Cree and then Mark Johnston were rewarded with tries the second converted by Gregor. Ian Nicholson then ran in two tries in a few minutes both of which were converted by Gregor. Darren Lindsay then got on the scoresheet after backing up well again converted by Gregor. Kenny Paterson and Mark Hunter then both collected tries , Gregor converting one before Fife Southern went over for an unconverted try right on time.
Final score Foots., 76 – Fife Southern 12
Anyone seeing this scoreline would have thought it an easy game but it was keenly fought through out with Foots pace being the deciding factor. However, we gave away far too many penalties which allowed Fife to stay in the game.
